Cultivating Emotional Balance Instructor

Eve Ekman, PhD is a contemplative social scientist and teacher in the field of emotional awareness and burnout prevention, who trained at UC Berkeley and UCSF Osher Center. At UCSF, Eve’s work includes public education offerings in Cultivating Emotional Balance (CEB), as well as developing, delivering and improving a curriculum for residents called Supporting Provider Resilience by Upping Compassion and Empathy (SPRUCE) since 2015.

In addition to her academic training, Dr. Ekman is a second-generation emotion researcher and has had meaningful collaborations with her father, renowned emotion researcher Dr. Paul Ekman. Their most recent project, The Atlas of Emotions, an online visual tool to teach a language for improving emotional awareness, was commissioned by the Dalai Lama.

Dr. Ekman’s writing on empathy, burnout and compassion has appeared in peer-reviewed journals, as well as in chapters in Oxford handbooks of positive psychology and the science of compassion. She has been an invited speaker to conferences around the world. Eve is a regular practitioner of meditation, yoga, and surfing and brings her enthusiasm of living a rich emotional life in to her teaching, as she inspires others to invite well-being in to every part of our life.

Dr. Ekman is the co-lead instructor for Cultivating Emotional Balance, an evidence-based emotional awareness training created by Dr. Paul Ekman and Buddhist scholar Alan Wallace. CEB training invites participants to investigate their driving motivations, as well as the roots of their destructive emotional episodes through tools of meditative practice and in-depth analysis of emotional events.
