Carla Kuon, MD

Integrative Medicine Physician

Carla Kuon, MD is an internist and faculty member at UCSF with over 12 years of experience, including co-managing UCSF’s Hematology Oncology service for seven years.

Dr. Kuon is interested in Traditional Chinese Medicine and integrative oncology. She has prior experience at the St. Helena Recovery Center and is interested in addiction medicine, particularly in non-opioid mechanisms for pain relief. Her interests also include integrative oncology, nutrition, and mind-body medicine.  She is currently involved in the creation of an addiction medicine service at UCSF, and exploring integrative methods in the treatment of addiction.

Carla launched a crowdfunding campaign to start a massage consult service for cancer patients at UCSF (NBC news story). The new consult service, which launched in May of 2017 in collaboration with the Osher Center, is providing much needed relief for patients undergoing chemotherapy for hematologic malignancies.

Carla was born in Lima, Peru and moved to the United States when she was twelve years old. She comes from a family of public health physicians with a history of service to the poor. Her personal interests include world travel, eating great food, and all forms of dance. She trained for many years as a viola player and as a flamenco dancer.
