A high priority of the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine is to conduct rigorous scientific research to determine the most effective treatments for patients that address all aspects of their health and wellness -- biological, psychological, social and spiritual. Through this research, the Osher Center will advance the evaluation of complementary, alternative, and integrative treatments and the integration of proven approaches into patient care. Our research aims not only to evaluate whether treatments work, but how they work. An important focus of our research is mind-body therapies. We are the recipients of a Center of Excellence grant from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine of the National Institutes of Health. The Center of Excellence grant will investigate the effects of a meditation intervention (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) in HIV infection, including the impact on disease course, neuroendocrine function, and the immune system. Other active areas of research include the health effects of Yoga, and Traditional Chinese Medicine/Acupuncture. |
