The proliferation of new technologies is rapidly transforming the medical landscape for doctors and patients alike. Although technological innovation has clear and important benefits for patients, such care can lead to increasing depersonalization of medical care unless these new technologies are integrated with personalized, compassionate care.
The UCSF Osher Center is ideally positioned to deliver just this kind of care. We are thrilled to launch a $25 million initiative as we celebrate our 10 year anniversary — and create an endowment that will help support the UCSF Osher Center for Integrative Medicine in this mission in the coming decades.
We are delighted that Alexsis de Raadt St. James has agreed to lead this endowment initiative. A member of the Osher Center Leadership Board and former Sloan Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Alexsis is the founder of the Althea Foundation, which tackles difficult and neglected mental health issues.

Join a team of clinicians and basic scientists as they explore the concept of healthy eating scientifically and shed light on the molecular basis of energy balance. You will learn why it is so hard to keep the pounds off, and why certain diets work and others don't. You will also discuss eating disorders and join a pathologist to look "hands-on" at what can happen to organs if there is an imbalance between the body's nutrition and its energy requirement.

The Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine (CAHCIM) held the first North American Research Conference on Complementary and Integrative Medicine, hosted by the University of Alberta. CAHCIM was founded in 2003 and is a not-for-profit membership organization comprised of 27 major medical schools in the U.S. and Canada that have existing research, education and clinical programs focused on Integrative Medicine. .

Beverly Burns, MS, LAc, an integrative medicine specialist at the Osher Center, explored the possibility of a model of health that incorporates Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) therapies with conventional treatment in the Women's Health Today seminar series: "Integrative Medicine: Can we truly integrate care?" Sponsored by the Center for Gender Equity, the webcast can be viewed on the UCTV Website.

TPT, Community Health Awareness Initiative, March 29, 2006
The New Medicine explores the burgeoning movement of integrative medicine. This two-hour documentary highlights the latest scientific research into the relationship between the mind and body and the new emphasis on treating the whole patient: mind, body, and spirit. The program features Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen, Clinical Professor, Family and Community Medicine at UCSF and member of the Advisory Board for UCSF’s Osher Center for Integrative Medicine.
A companion Website for The New Medicine offers concrete tools and resources that empower consumers to take charge of their health and pursue a more integrated approach to their healthcare. These include:

Saw Palmetto is shown to have little effect with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia in the largest study to date on the subject by Osher affiliated faculty Stephen Bent, MD and Andrew Avins, MD, MPH. Their study results are published in the February issue of the The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM).

In January, Osher Center's Acupuncturist Beverly Burns received the Jefferson Award for outstanding community service. Beverly has been practicing Chinese medicine since 1991, specializing in women's health and cancer. In addition, she is Clinical Director and co-founder of the Charlotte Maxwell Complementary Clinic in Oakland, a clinic for low-income women with cancer.

The Institute of Medicine of the National Academies released a report
on the use of complementary and alternative medicine in the United States.
They recommended “health profession schools incorporate sufficient
information about complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) into the
standard curriculum at all levels to enable licensed professionals to
competently advise their patients about CAM.
See
full report.

The survey was performed in 2002 in which a diverse population of 31,000
American adults was interviewed about their use of CAM. Thirty-six
percent reported using some form of CAM in the previous 12 months.
When prayer (used specifically for health reasons) was included in the
definition of CAM, this percentage increased to 62% (Barnes et al 2004).
