On Thursday, May 22, the Osher Center had the great honor of hosting the First Lady of Estonia, Mrs. Evelin Ilves. Mrs. Ilves, who has a medical degree, is also the current European spokesperson for the World Health Organization (WHO) on non-communicable diseases, which include such lifestyle diseases as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
Although Integrative Medicine is still a fledgeling field in Estonia, as it is in much of Europe, Mrs. Ilves has a great interest in this area, and has been studying Ayurveda for many years. She was given a tour of our clinic and group programs facilities, and was briefed about our cutting-edge research in the field of Integrative Medicine. Before she left, Mrs. Ilves kindly gifted us with a copy of her fabulous cookbook, Gifts of Taste.
We thoroughly enjoyed meeting the First Lady, and we hope that this is the start of a long-term relationship between Integrative Medicine in the United States and Eastern Europe!
While in San Francisco, Mrs. Ilves was also able to tour UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, as well as visit with Dr. Jaime Sepulveda, the Executive Director of UCSF Global Health Sciences. The three visits are chronicled on the official Estonian presidential website.
